Celebrating excellence in the legal profession
The New Zealand Law Awards 2022 recognised the year's top-performing lawyers, law firms and in-house legal departments for their outstanding contribution to the profession
NZ Lawyer continues to be New Zealand’s leading media resource for legal professionals, delivering essential news, insights and analysis to you each week. The last two years have been extremely challenging for businesses across New Zealand – that’s why the work of law firms and lawyers is so worthy of acknowledgement. The legal profession has risen to the challenge of supporting its clients and communities through one of the most challenging periods in the country’s corporate history. Every year, the judging panel for the New Zealand Law Awards is increasingly impressed by the quality of Excellence Awardee submissions, commenting on the complexity, professionalism, innovation and legal acumen demonstrated by legal professionals – and 2022 is no exception. These awards represent the pinnacle of achievement for lawyers and law firms. We want to thank the panel of judges who contributed their time and considerable knowledge to the judging process. With hundreds of high-calibre nominations from New Zealand’s best law firms and lawyers, the competition was very strong – the winners represent the best of this elite group. Congratulations to all the Excellence Awardees and winners this year. Finally, we would like to thank all our sponsors, whose generous support of these awards is greatly appreciated. Our thanks go out to James & Wells, Lane Neave, Resolution Institute, Robert Walters, Russell McVeagh and our champagne sponsor, Artemis Executive Recruitment.

Feeling the energy in the room The victors were honoured at the event’s return to a live, in-person gala ceremony after two years of virtual gatherings due to COVID-19, something that did not go unappreciated by Guardians of New Zealand Superannuation’s legal team, the winner of the Financial Services In-House Team of the Year award. “Being there in person was fantastic; you could feel the energy in the room. It’s nice to be able to reconnect with others, and it was the first event most of us had been to in quite a while with so many people in one place,” said GC Craig Douglas. Wi Pere Mita, principal at Diversity & Inclusion Initiative of the Year winner Laidlaw Law & Consultancy, added that it was “great to be able to celebrate in person”. “We all had the opportunity to come together and celebrate the successes of firms and individuals going amazing mahi in the profession,” he said, adding that the most memorable thing about 2022 for him was “seeing the resilience and fortitude of my peers and colleagues in the profession in light of the setbacks and adverse impacts of COVID-19”. Achieving major milestones For Mita, the recognition of his firm’s D&I initiatives represented “a significant milestone in the history of the legal profession as it recognises the importance of building cultural capability, capacity and fluency from a Te Ao Maori perspective”. He praised the profession’s integration of Te Tiriti o Waitangi principles. “It's been heartening to see an intentional and deliberate shift within the profession towards accepting, acknowledging and adopting strategies that show dedication and commitment to upholding Te Tiriti o Waitangi and its principles,” Mita said. “We're seeing an increase in the uptake of professional development that seeks to increase understanding of how to work in a more culturally responsive way, particularly with respect to tikanga and reo-centric approaches.” Meanwhile, Douglas and Guardians of New Zealand Superannuation are looking to use the organisation’s platform as an institutional investor “to effect real positive change” in New Zealand. Looking ahead Organisations everywhere are seeking the best talent to bolster future prospects, so Douglas believes it’s important to work smart. “It’s pretty clear that resourcing has become an issue, not just in the legal profession and not only in New Zealand but worldwide. The competition for top talent will continue. To deal with this challenge we’re thinking more about how we can work smarter, in particular focusing on processes to automate or eliminate and on how technology can make our day jobs easier and more productive. It’s about optimising our time so we are focusing on the areas where we can add the most value,” he said. Mita added that the resourcing of professional development and organisational transformation activities could further boost D&I in the profession. “We have been offering scholarships to community organisations to undertake our Tuhono tikanga-based mediation training as we don’t want cost to be a barrier to D&I transformation. We encourage the profession to take similar action,” he said.
