Established in 2017 by Kelly Dixon, Dixon & Co Lawyers was premised on the whakatauki (proverb) “Kia whakatōmuri te haere ki mua” – “Walk confidently forward into the future by looking to the past for guidance”.
After 13 years of practising primarily in Māori legal issues, Dixon identified the need for a firm that dealt with more than “just Treaty claims”. As historical grievance-based claims in the Waitangi Tribunal started to wind down and kaupapa-based inquiries began to commence, Dixon saw the need to modernise her approach to law. The result is Dixon & Co Lawyers – a boutique law firm that provides bespoke solutions to clients across multiple jurisdictions and practice areas.
“Our company was founded on our recognition that Māori continue the upward trajectory of success,” Dixon says. “We celebrate the fact that Māori women are some of the most entrepreneurial in the world and that Māori whānau, hapū and iwi are shaping up to be more successful in the future.”
Dixon & Co Lawyers currently handles Māori legal issues, relationship property law, family law, property law, estate planning, environmental & planning law, trusts, employment law and refugee & human rights law.
With Māori entering business and expanding into diverse areas of the workforce, Dixon & Co Lawyers has diversified to ensure that it continues to meet the needs of its clients. The desire to contribute to building strong communities is reflected in the successful establishment of a Family Law team managed and supervised by business partner Amy Chesnutt. The firm also retained 100% of its professional staff across 2022–23 and is currently actively recruiting new lawyers to help manage its burgeoning caseload.
Being community focused with a distinct Māori flavour has been integral to Dixon & Co Lawyers’ development. From a humble beginning with two lawyers, the firm has now grown into a team of passionate wāhine comprising seven full-time lawyers, a registered legal executive and two support staff.
“We strive to make a difference in the lives of people individually, within whānau, communities, businesses and across generations by helping our clients to navigate the legal world in a way that makes sense to them,” Dixon says.
Dixon & Co Lawyers was named Boutique Law Firm of the Year at the 2023 New Zealand Law Awards.
